The
Goa SPCA
The
Goa Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
was set up in 2000, with the help of the central Ministry
of Social Justice and Empowerment, and is recognised
by the Animal Welfare Board of India. It is registered
under the Societies Act, and with the Income Tax authorities
as an approved charitable institution. Its Chairman,
Lynn de Souza, a well known advertising professional,
is also a certified veterinary nurse trained in Australia,
a master trainer for the AWBI, and a life member of
the Bombay SPCA and of PFA Goa. The Managing Trustee,
Lt Col Nageshkar, is the Secretary of the Bombay
SPCA, a member of the AWBI National Board, and very
well known in animal welfare circles for his dedicated
work over the past decade.
The
Governor of Goa is the Chief Patron, while other
members of its Advisory Board include Padma Bhushan
Julio Ribeiro, the country's most famous police
officer; Padma Shri Norma Alvares, noted environment
lawyer; Sanjeev Khirwar, former Collector of
North Goa; Capt HK Malviya, the Director of
the Animal Husbandry Dept of Goa; and of course
Mrs Maneka Gandhi herself.
WSPA
In
june 2006, the Goa SPCA was aceoted as a member society
of the World Society for Protection of Animals, the
largest federation of animal welfare bodies in the world,
with consultative status to the UN. The Goa SPCA was
the only Indian NGO to be admitted in 2006 into WSPA
which now has nearly 700 member societies in over 175
countries.
Lynn de Souza attended the biannual WSPA Symposium in
London in June 2006, interacting with over 350 animal
welfare people from 120 countries. She was privileged
to be the 144th signatory to a special worldwide petition
started by WSPA to generate over 1 million signatures
- to be submitted to the UN to adopt the Declaration

The
Goa SPCA has four main objectives
1.
To provide shelter and medical facilities to all animals
in need, by virtue of age, infirmity, injury, abuse
or calamity
2. to spread awareness about prevention of cruelty
to animals through workshops, the mass media, and other
teaching and promotional aids
3. to appoint inspectors to investigate cruelty
to animals, wherever they may occur, and assist the
state machinery in punishing these offenses
4.
to help set up and assist other animal welfare organisations
in the State of Goa in carrying out their charge.
