| A
zoonosis is a disease
that is transmitted from animals to man. The most talked
of these days are leptospirosis,
and "mad cow disease"
(not prevalent in India), but by far the deadliest of
all is rabies.
It
is essential to have oneself and one's pets vaccinated
against these diseases. All food animals need to also
be regularly vaccinated, or their meat would not be
fit for consumption. However, most people have a rather
casual attitude towards vaccination, some even fear
it. World Zoonoses Day is celebrated on July
6 every year to bring the problem into people's
consciousness, and remind them to take action.
On
World Zoonoses Day this year, the GSPCA conducted a
vaccination yatra from North to South Goa, vaccinating
local dogs against rabies absolutely free.
Ads
in the daily press invited people to bring their dogs
to the roving van, identifiable by a banner, at specific
timings. Though it was a very rainy day, several animal
carers used this opportunity to protect their pets or
the neighborhood dogs from this dreaded disease, and
as many as 85 dogs were vaccinated in a matter
of a few hours all over the state.
Should
you want to set up a special camp of this nature in
your neighborhood, and are willing to help us round
up and restrain the dogs, do get in touch with Dr
Kiran Rao at 0832 651262, or email lynn@goaspca.com.
But
remember, only local dogs are vaccinated free of cost,
whether they are pets or strays.
