The GSPCA has been holding roving vaccination camps in the State to innoculate stray dogs against rabies. Watch out for the ads that appear in the general press announcing the date and location of these camps, and do volunteer your services at these camps. We encourage owners of local dogs to bring in their pets for a free vaccination, and hope that many youngsters will help round up the neighborhood dogs in a humane way for this purpose.

On request, the GSPCA will also hold sterilisation camps in your area, provided you can arrange facilities for keeping the animals post operatively till suture removal and release.

World Zoonoses Day

A zoonosis is a disease that is transmitted from animals to man. The most talked of these days are leptospirosis, and "mad cow disease" (not prevalent in India), but by far the deadliest of all is rabies.

It is essential to have oneself and one's pets vaccinated against these diseases. All food animals need to also be regularly vaccinated, or their meat would not be fit for consumption. However, most people have a rather casual attitude towards vaccination, some even fear it. World Zoonoses Day is celebrated on July 6 every year to bring the problem into people's consciousness, and remind them to take action.

This year the Goa SPCA was invited by the citizens of Merces Panchayat to conduct a free anti rabies vaccination camp and to hold lectures in schools. Dr Dinella and Dr Deby delivered addresses on animal first aid and how to prevent rabies. The Merces Vigilant Citizens Association kindly donated the vaccines - 167 dogs were immunised against rabies on that day!
